The fifth-generation Charger came as a complete surprise to fans: it was a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback built on the L-body platform. Despite the modest performance of base versions, the model was offered in sportier trims, including the turbocharged Shelby Charger, which showcased decent performance. This car was the company's attempt to survive in the era of fuel crises and shifting market priorities, completely breaking with the legacy of the powerful V8s of previous decades.
