The fourth-generation Series 60 Special (Fleetwood Sixty Special) was produced for 1948 and 1949 on GM's full-size C-body platform. The 1948 model introduced smooth post-war body contours crowned by small rear tailfins inspired by the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft. Built on a 130-inch wheelbase, the four-door sedan featured a bold front grille structure, plush interior appointments, and full-length bodyside chrome moldings.
In 1949, Cadillac introduced its landmark 331 cubic-inch (5.4-liter) high-compression overhead-valve (OHV) V8 engine producing 160 horsepower, which replaced the aging 346 flathead V8 (150 hp). The modern V8 was lighter, more compact, and substantially more efficient. Mated to a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, standard features included hydraulic power windows, power bench seating, and dual-servo drum brakes.
