Buick Regal III (W-body) gallery (1988–1996)

Debuting for the 1988 model year, the third-generation Buick Regal represented a monumental shift in engineering philosophy by adopting the front-wheel-drive unibody GM W-body platform (GM10 project) featuring fully independent suspension with a transverse composite rear leaf spring. Initially offered solely as an aerodynamic two-door coupe, a four-door sedan joined the lineup for the 1990 model year to expand family appeal. Under the hood, Regal utilized exclusively transversely mounted gasoline V6 engines, starting with the 2.8L LB6 V6, progressing to the 3.1L LH0 and L82 V6 units, and topped by the venerable 3.8L Buick 3800 Series I V6 engine producing 170 horsepower in the Gran Sport (GS) performance package. Power was transmitted to the front wheels via GM 4-speed automatic transmissions, specifically the 4T60 and electronically controlled 4T60-E. Facelifts in 1993 and 1995 brought revised front fascias, redesigned taillights, structural refinements, and an all-new dashboard with standard dual airbags. Sales were concentrated in North America and Middle Eastern markets.
