The seventh-generation Buick Regal represents a landmark transition for the storied nameplate, heralding the revival of a traditional rear-wheel-drive layout last seen on an American Buick sedan in the 1996 Roadmaster. Engineered on General Motors' upgraded rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2-2 platform, the Regal shares structural underpinnings with sibling models from Chevrolet and Cadillac. Slated for production at GM's Lansing, Michigan assembly facility, this model targets younger customers while bridging the pricing territory between mainstream crossovers and luxury vehicles.
Moving away from the front-wheel-drive transverse layout of the sixth-generation E2XX platform, the new generation adopts classic rear-drive sedan proportions featuring an elongated hoodline, a set-back cabin, and reduced front overhangs. Rather than prioritizing aggressive track performance like its platform counterparts, the Buick Regal is focused squarely on cabin tranquility, premium materials, and supple ride comfort.
The powertrain portfolio is built around GM's turbocharged inline-four engine family. The entry-level offering is an updated 2.0-liter LSY turbocharged four-cylinder delivering approximately 250 horsepower, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission with standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Higher trims offer a potent 2.7-liter turbo-four generating more than 310 horsepower, complemented by an electrified hybrid powertrain option.
