Buick Regal II (G-body) gallery (1978–1987)

Introduced for the 1978 model year, the second-generation Buick Regal underwent significant downsizing to improve fuel economy while retaining its traditional rear-wheel-drive body-on-frame layout on the GM A-body platform, later reclassified as the G-body in 1982. The body lineup included the popular two-door coupe, a four-door notchback sedan, and a five-door Estate Wagon with woodgrain exterior trim. Engine options were exceptionally diverse, ranging from naturally aspirated 3.2L, 3.8L, and 4.1L V6s and 4.3L to 5.7L V8s to Oldsmobile 4.3L V6 and 5.7L V8 diesel engines, paired with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transmissions. The generation is universally celebrated for pioneering turbocharged V6 technology, culminating in the sinister all-black Grand National introduced in 1982, the T-Type, and the ultra-rare 1987 GNX developed with McLaren Performance Technologies boasting 276 hp. Extensive aerodynamic revisions in 1981 gave the coupe a sloping front nose, which formed the base for Buick's NASCAR dominance. Sold primarily in North America, this generation remains an automotive icon.
