About this generation

The first-generation BMW Z4 introduced Chris Bangle’s flame-surfacing design language alongside a stiffer chassis and razor-sharp dynamic handling.

Replacing the Z3 in 2002, the first-generation BMW Z4 elevated the brand's roadster formula with modern engineering and bold styling. Designed under Chris Bangle’s influence, the E85 roadster introduced the distinctive Flame Surfacing design language characterized by intersecting convex and concave lines. It was significantly larger, stiffer, and more refined than its predecessor. In 2006, BMW added the E86 Coupe to the lineup, featuring a fixed double-bubble roof that drastically increased torsional rigidity for track enthusiasts.

Under the bonnet, the E85 and E86 were powered primarily by BMW’s acclaimed naturally aspirated inline-six petrol engines, including the M54 and lightweight magnesium-aluminum N52 units ranging from 2.2 to 3.0 liters. Utilizing multi-link rear suspension adapted from the E46 3 Series and electric power steering, the original Z4 delivered 50:50 weight distribution and precise cornering dynamics, making it a compelling benchmark in the lightweight sports car segment.
