About the model
The first generation BMW Z4 (E85/E86) debuted in 2002 as a successor to the Z3, initially offered as a soft-top roadster and later joined by a coupe. It was powered by naturally aspirated inline engines paired with manual, automatic, or automated manual gearboxes. A mid-cycle refresh brought updated lighting, revised bumpers, and tweaked powertrains.
The second generation (E89), launched in 2009, replaced the two separate body types with a single roadster featuring a two-piece retractable hardtop. This iteration focused more on grand touring comfort, adopting turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines alongside manual, automatic, and dual-clutch transmissions.
The third generation (G29), produced since 2018, returned to a lightweight fabric soft top to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity. Built on a modern chassis, the roadster features turbocharged engines and automatic transmissions, preserving the classic proportions and rear-wheel-drive dynamics.
