Launched in 1999, the E53 X5 revolutionized the 4x4 market by eschewing traditional body-on-frame construction in favor of a unibody structure shared in spirit with the E39 5 Series. Designed under Frank Stephenson, its muscular proportions instantly defined the luxury crossover blueprint.
The E53 proved that a tall utility vehicle could deliver sharp steering response, minimal body roll, and exhilarating performance—especially in 4.6is and 4.8is trim. It established the SAV standard that competitors worldwide rushed to follow in the decades since.
