About this generation

The second-generation X1 shifted to a front-wheel-drive platform to maximize interior space, utility, and everyday efficiency.

The second-generation X1 marked a strategic architectural paradigm shift by transitioning to the transverse-engine UKL2 modular platform. This structural realignment enabled BMW engineers to completely redesign the cabin layout, creating substantially increased headroom, rear legroom, and cargo capacity within a slightly shorter overall footprint. Visually, the F48 embraced a more authoritative SUV stance, featuring prominent kidney grilles, sculpted body sides, and sharp LED light signatures.

Inside, the vehicle introduced an elevated seating position alongside high-grade materials and intuitive technology centered around the iDrive infotainment ecosystem. Power was delivered by responsive modular B-series 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engines paired with smooth 8-speed automatic transmissions. The mid-cycle introduction of the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid model further elevated its market appeal, cementing the F48 as a global benchmark for urban utility.
