BMW X1 photos

The first-generation BMW X1, codenamed E84, arrived in 2009. Engineered on a rear-wheel-drive passenger car architecture with a longitudinal engine layout, it offered both rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. Powertrains comprised four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines paired with manual or torque-converter automatic transmissions. A mid-cycle refresh in 2012 brought updated exterior bumpers, revised lights, and efficiency improvements.

The second generation F48, produced between 2015 and 2022, brought a fundamental architectural change by moving to a front-wheel-drive platform with transverse engines. This layout significantly enhanced interior space and luggage capacity. The engine lineup shifted primarily to turbocharged three- and four-cylinder units mated to automatic or dual-clutch transmissions.

Introduced in 2022, the third-generation U11 expanded on modern design and versatility. Featuring a bolder upright stance, modernized cabin ergonomics, and updated mild-hybrid powertrains, it continues as a practical compact SUV offering front-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
