About this generation

BMW's inaugural compact crossover that established the premium subcompact SUV segment using a traditional rear-wheel-drive architecture.

Debuting as the pioneer of the premium subcompact crossover realm, the E84 dramatically altered expectations for small high-riding vehicles. Engineered on the proven chassis of the E91 3 Series Touring, it retained pure driver-focused fundamentals, including a longitudinally mounted engine layout, communicative hydraulic steering, and standard rear-wheel drive. Visually, the model stood out with its elongated hood proportions, muscular wheel arches, and functional protective body cladding that hinted at light off-road competence.

Under the hood, the E84 offered a versatile powertrain lineup ranging from efficient 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline and diesel engines to the coveted 3.0-liter turbocharged N55 inline-six in the top-tier xDrive35i. Complemented by the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system favoring rear-axle bias, the crossover delivered engaging dynamics across all road surfaces. This first-generation X1 successfully carved out a vital new market niche, selling over 700,000 units globally during its production run.
