Built since October 2021, the i4 uses the modular CLAR platform and shares its bodyshell with the 4 Series Gran Coupé, which let BMW build it on the same Munich line and keep costs down. A closed kidney grille and aero wheels mark it out, while inside sits the BMW Curved Display running iDrive 8.

An 83.9 kWh battery gives the rear-drive eDrive40 up to 590 km on the WLTP cycle. The all-wheel-drive M50 was the first electric car developed by BMW M: 400 kW (544 hp), 795 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The entry-level eDrive35 and all-wheel-drive xDrive40 followed. With the arrival of the Neue Klasse, the i4's place in the range is gradually passing to the i3 NA0 saloon.
