About this generation

The first-generation mid-engine Audi R8 (Type 42) featured an all-aluminum spaceframe, distinctive Sideblades, and screaming V8/V10 power.

Introduced in 2006, the mid-engine Audi R8 (chassis code Type 42) transferred Audi's multi-year Le Mans racing dominance to the road. Constructed around an all-aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) architecture, the R8 became famous for its striking exterior design highlighted by side air intake panels known as 'Sideblades'. The range encompassed both Coupe and open-top Spyder bodies.

Initial models featured a high-revving 4.2-liter V8 FSI (420 hp), joined in 2009 by a 5.2-liter V10 FSI (525 hp) visible beneath a illuminated rear glass engine bay cover. A mid-engine rear-biased quattro AWD system delivered exceptional balance. Transmission choices included an open-gate 6-speed manual alongside R tronic and dual-clutch S tronic automatics.
