The first-generation Audi R8 Type 42 debuted in 2006, introducing a mid-engine layout paired with permanent quattro all-wheel drive. Built around an aluminum space frame, the model initially arrived as a coupe and was later joined by an open-top roadster. Powertrain options included naturally aspirated V8 and V10 engines mated to a gated manual transmission or an R Tronic automated manual. A mid-cycle refresh updated the styling and replaced the single-clutch gearbox with a dual-clutch S Tronic unit.

The second generation Type 4S arrived in 2015, continuing the established coupe and roadster formula. It utilized an updated platform combining aluminum and carbon fiber to improve structural rigidity while shedding weight. The atmospheric V10 became the central powerplant, linked exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electro-hydraulic all-wheel-drive system.

A subsequent facelift brought sharper exterior styling, aero revisions, and chassis tweaks, while rear-wheel-drive variants were added to the lineup. Production of the generation ended in 2024, marking the conclusion of the mid-engine flagship line.
