Next-Generation BMW 3 Series Photographed Undisguised in M350 xDrive Form
BMW's next-generation 3 Series sedan has surfaced ahead of schedule, captured entirely undisguised in near-production form at a BMW facility in Munich. Shared originally by a Reddit user, the spied sports sedan represents the high-performance M Performance variant, which is shedding its traditional M340i moniker in favor of the M350 xDrive designation.
The prototype's standout visual cue is a quad exhaust setup, a feature previously reserved for full-fledged M cars. However, this is clearly the M Performance model rather than the full-fat M3, as it lacks the widened tracks and aggressively flared wheel arches typical of full M division products. Furthermore, the true next-generation M3, codenamed G84, is not expected to arrive until 2028 at the earliest. A license plate bearing "PP" markings also hints at the possible inclusion of factory M Performance Parts, along with a discreet trunk lid spoiler and glossy black exterior trim from the standard M Sport Package.
Codenamed G50, the eighth-generation 3 Series exhibits styling that closely mirrors the all-electric i3 sedan, despite fundamental mechanical divergence beneath the skin. While the combustion-free i3 is underpinned by BMW's dedicated Neue Klasse electric platform, the combustion-powered 3 Series continues on the proven CLAR architecture. Packaging internal combustion engines necessitated a longer front section, subtly shifting the sedan's proportions compared to its electric sibling, alongside enlarged cooling intakes tailored for base four-cylinder engines and the range-topping turbocharged inline-six.
Under the skin, the M350 xDrive will serve as the sole non-M six-cylinder offering in the lineup. BMW will not introduce a direct successor to the diesel-powered M340d, and a rear-wheel-drive M350 is virtually off the table. Standard hardware for the M350 xDrive includes an adaptive suspension and an M Sport differential. While recent BMW models lean heavily toward black or two-tone rims, this prototype featured traditional silver wheels; confirmed configurations include a 20-inch staggered wheel setup wearing 245/35 R20 front and 275/30 R20 rear tires.
Inside, the G50 represents a radical transformation from the outgoing G20 generation. The cabin architecture borrows heavily from the i3, ditching the long-standing iDrive rotary dial and replacing most physical switchgear with a minimalist, screen-centric layout.
Manufacturing for the G50 3 Series will shift away from BMW's historic Munich facility to the Dingolfing plant, where the 5 Series and 7 Series are produced, although the electric i3 will remain in Munich. Following an official world debut in late September, European customer deliveries are slated to begin first, followed by a United States launch for the 2027 model year.
