The Nissan Z Surpasses the Toyota Supra in Sales

The Rise of the Nissan Z

In a surprising turn of events, the Nissan Z has finally surpassed its long-time rival, the Toyota Supra, in sales. Despite the Supra's dominance over the past four years, the tables have turned as Nissan's new sports car takes the lead.

After a slow start, Nissan has ramped up production of the Z, resulting in a significant increase in sales. In 2024, Nissan sold 3,164 Zs in the U.S., surpassing the Supra's 2,615 sales by a margin of 549 cars.

A Shift in the Market

While the Z is not a brand-new model, it is still considered newer compared to the Supra. This, combined with its lower base price, has contributed to its success in the market. With a starting price of $44,110, the Z offers a more affordable option compared to the Supra's $57,385 base price.

Nissan's introduction of the 420-horsepower Nismo model and Toyota's addition of a manual transmission to the Supra have also played a role in shaping the sales landscape.

Challenges from Competitors

Although the Z has achieved impressive sales figures, it still faces competition from other sports cars in the market. The Ford Mustang sold 44,003 units in 2024, and the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ collectively added to the total sales in the affordable rear-drive sports car segment.

Despite the success of the Z, its visibility on the road remains limited. However, with increasing sales, it is likely that more Zs will be seen on the streets in the near future.
