Introducing the 2027 BMW iX3: Pioneering BMW's Most Significant Transformation Since the 1960s
After years of anticipation, BMW has finally launched the first model from its next-generation lineup, known as Neue Klasse. The 2027 iX3 electric SUV represents a crucial step forward, embodying the future direction of the brand.
BMW describes this initiative as its largest investment ever, drawing parallels to the transformative Neue Klasse models introduced in the 1960s. This comprehensive overhaul began five years ago, encompassing design, architecture, technology, software, and manufacturing processes.
The 2027 iX3 is just the beginning. The Neue Klasse platform will initially focus on electric vehicles, but by the end of 2027, it is expected to underpin around 40 different models, including SUVs, sedans, coupes, and possibly even a supercar, all featuring various powertrains. This means that the Neue Klasse philosophy will influence all future BMW vehicles.
Leading the charge is the compact luxury iX3 50 xDrive, which made its global debut at the 2025 IAA Mobility auto show in Munich. The choice of the iX3 was strategic, fitting the development timeline and targeting the largest market segment. BMW needed a high-volume, globally appealing model to anchor this significant investment.
The iX3 is built on the new Gen 6 platform and fully represents the Neue Klasse vision. In contrast, the upcoming BMW X3 will continue using the CLAR platform but will incorporate Neue Klasse styling and technology. Notably, the iX3 is BMW’s first software-defined vehicle, allowing for over-the-air updates that enhance and add features over its lifespan.
Forward-Thinking Design
The design approach for Neue Klasse vehicles aims to appear as if they've leapt several generations ahead. BMW has showcased various concepts over the years, including the I Vision DEE in 2023, the Vision Neue Klasse, and the Vision X SUV, which closely previewed the production-ready iX3.
Oliver Heilmer, BMW’s Head of Design, emphasized the importance of a clean yet robust exterior featuring precise lines, flush door handles, pronounced shoulders, and a strong stance. The new front end replaces traditional chrome elements with dynamic lighting. The iconic vertical kidney grille, a nod to the 1960s Neue Klasse models, has been refined and illuminated. The aerodynamic rear boasts redesigned taillights that highlight the vehicle's width, large windows, and a panoramic glass roof that create a spacious and airy cabin. The inclusion of a tow hitch underscores the SUV’s practical utility.
Innovative Interior Features
The interior of the 2027 BMW iX3 50 iDrive showcases a sleek black and white two-tone design. While some areas feature durable black plastics, the armrests are upholstered in soft leatherette. The dashboard incorporates a 3D knit made from recycled plastics and repurposed fishing nets, reflecting BMW’s commitment to sustainability. The M Sport package enhances the interior with leather trim and microsuede accents, while futuristic headrests contribute to the high-tech ambiance.
A standout feature is the Panoramic Vision 43.3-inch display, which projects information and apps onto the lower windshield area with sharp, clear graphics visible from all seats. Users can customize the interface by rearranging widgets or removing them for a minimalist view.
Controls are managed through an angular center console screen with a chevron design, enhanced by matrix backlit technology for better visibility. Persistent commands at the bottom allow for easy access to climate control, music, phone connectivity, navigation, and vehicle settings.
The 3D head-up display integrates navigation and automated driving information directly into the driver’s field of vision, ensuring essential data is always accessible.
The multifunction steering wheel features haptic controls that have replaced the traditional iDrive controller. Controls on the left side manage driver assistance and parking aids, lighting up only when active, while the right side is dedicated to infotainment functions.
Additional thoughtful design elements include triangular cupholders for secure beverage placement, a sliding gearshift that frees up central console space, and provisions for a second phone alongside the charging pad.
When starting a drive, users can interact with the vehicle icon to perform system checks, ensuring everything is in order. The 'My Modes' feature allows for cabin ambiance customization, adjusting colors and images to match selected themes.
BMW’s Interactive Personal Assistant
The new operating system leverages data from approximately 10 million BMW vehicles worldwide. The intelligent personal assistant features an avatar activated by the voice command “Hey, BMW.” The BMW logo transforms into a friendly blue circle with expressive eyes and eyebrows, resembling an amiable alien. This assistant can wink, blush, and respond interactively without staring for extended periods. Powered by Alexa technology, it provides directions, answers questions, and performs various functions through a male or female voice.
While the majority of controls are now on the touchscreen, physical buttons remain on the roof, doors, and center console for traditional functions like adjusting air vents.
Standard features such as a traditional rearview mirror, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto remain available, ensuring compatibility with existing technologies.
Rear passengers benefit from individual air vents and USB ports, although there are no additional storage pouches on the back of the front seats. A cargo net helps keep items secure when the second-row seats are folded flat, and a passthrough accommodates skis and other long items.
An additional front trunk (frunk) offers 2 cubic feet of extra storage, ideal for items like charging cables. The frunk features a decorative cover with the BMW roundel, maintaining the vehicle's elegant appearance.
