BMW Enhances 7 Series with Major Interior Revamp and Extended Electric Range

BMW has introduced a mid-cycle refresh for its flagship 7 Series sedan, bringing updated exterior styling and a thoroughly modernized interior. This update does not represent a new generation but refines powertrains and incorporates BMW’s latest Neue Klasse design language inside the cabin.

The exterior enhancements include a redesigned kidney grille, new headlamp units, and a subtly refreshed BMW emblem. Tail lights have also been revamped. However, the most notable transformation takes place within the vehicle, featuring advanced technology and design elements.

Inside, the 7 Series debuts BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system—a wide screen that stretches across the dashboard base of the windshield. The centerpiece is a 17.9-inch infotainment display complemented by a pioneering passenger-side screen that comes standard. Later this year, the U.S. market will see the release of two electric and two combustion engine variants.

Powertrain Details: Combustion and Electric Options

The base rear-wheel-drive 740 remains powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an enlarged turbocharger. Power rises from 375 to 394 horsepower, while torque stays at 398 lb-ft. The 740 xDrive accelerates from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds and reaches a top speed limited to 155 mph.

The electric lineup begins with the i7 50 xDrive model, featuring a dual-motor setup that maintains 449 horsepower but increases torque from 479 to 487 lb-ft. Its 0-60 mph sprint remains at 5.3 seconds, with a slight increase in top speed to 130 mph.

The more powerful i7 60 xDrive offers 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque, matching the previous model’s output. However, it delivers a quicker 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and boosts top speed from 130 to 149 mph.

Advancements in Battery and Charging Technology

Both updated i7 models share new battery technology featuring a 112.0-kilowatt-hour net capacity. These vehicles utilize BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology with innovative cylindrical cells initially introduced in the iX3 model.

Charging capabilities have improved significantly, with the maximum charging rate rising from 195 to 250 kilowatts. This reduces the time to charge the battery from 10% to 80% down to just 28 minutes, compared to 34 minutes previously. Efficiency gains have also extended the i7 60’s driving range from about 311 miles to over 350 miles per charge.

Plug-In Hybrid Variant and Pricing

BMW plans to introduce the 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid in 2027. This model pairs a 308-horsepower inline-six engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor, delivering a combined output of 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It shares the same acceleration capability but increases top speed from 130 to 155 mph. Production of the PHEV will start in late 2026, with pricing yet to be announced; the current 2026 version starts at $111,550.

The refreshed 7 Series sees a modest price increase of $500 compared to last year. The rear-wheel-drive 740 kicks off at $101,350, including a $1,550 destination fee, while the 740 xDrive is priced at $104,350. The electric i7 50 xDrive starts at $107,750, and the i7 60 xDrive is set at $126,250. Production and sales of the updated 7 Series will begin in July.

Although the exterior changes are subtle, the interior transformation with the Neue Klasse design language marks a significant step forward, aligning the 7 Series with BMW’s future vision. While some may find the cabin’s styling busy, it undeniably brings a fresh and advanced atmosphere to the luxury sedan segment.
