BMW Introduces M2 Racing Edition with Four-Cylinder Powerplant
BMW has unveiled its newest entry-level motorsport model, the M2 Racing Edition. Priced starting at €98,000 ($111,421 at current exchange rates), this variant comes fully prepared for track action. Unlike its road-going counterpart, the M2 Racing is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine instead of the traditional inline-six.
The engine, borrowed from the 2 Series Gran Coupe, generates 313 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. BMW claims the M2 Racing can achieve speeds exceeding 168 miles per hour, paired solely with a ZF seven-speed automatic transmission enhanced with BMW M Motorsport software.
Enhanced Performance Features
The race car is equipped with a mechanical differential lock featuring separate cooling, BMW M compound brakes, non-adjustable KW shock absorbers, and adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars. Its exterior boasts LED headlights, a front splitter, a rear fog light, and a lightweight roof, all finished in BMW’s U300 Alpine White III.
Interior and Safety Innovations
Inside, the M2 Racing includes a DMSB-certified welded safety cage compliant with the latest FIA standards, a Sabelt GT-AM safety seat, and a fire extinguisher system. Comfort is not overlooked, with air conditioning included alongside race-specific features like BMW M Motorsport drive modes and an adjustable pit speed limiter.
Customization Options
Optional upgrades available for the M2 Racing include a rear wing, weight ballast box, data logger, Endless endurance brake pads, Sabelt GT-Pro driver seat, air jack system, muffler with adjustable exhaust flap, start number light, passenger seat package, car cover, and M Motorsport decals.
Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M, commented, “The M2 Racing provides an accessible yet high-performance option for racing teams and drivers, ensuring durability and an exhilarating driving experience.” BMW emphasizes the vehicle’s reduced operating costs, attributing this advantage to its close relation to the production model.
Development of the M2 Racing commenced in November 2023, involving powertrain and dynamics testing as well as an endurance test car that logged over 18,464 miles. The M2 Racing is scheduled to hit the racetracks in 2026, with sales beginning in June.
