VW's Withdrawn EPA Request for Next Year's Diesel Offerings

VW has moved aside the application for EPA certification on the next model year’s diesel cars.

The thing is that without this certification it will be impossible to sell the automaker’s diesel units in America. This means that the cars will probably stay in the dealership lots for quite some time. The German company has been waiting for the EPA’s approval for the diesel offerings. Though, it has called the request back, probably because of the large diesel emissions scandal that is happening now. Discussions with American regulators might have influenced the automaker’s decision.

The CEO of U.S. VW revealed the decision in a written statement that will be delivered at a hearing. It will happen before Commerce committee and the House Energy. The CEO’s testimony will speak about the software feature included in the automaker’s emissions control strategy. The feature should be revealed by regulators. Besides, it should receive their encouragement as an “auxiliary emissions control device”. Such devices are legal in America. The spokesman at VW of America shared with Automotive News that the new software differs from the cheating device.

The CEO also stated that all the three generations of the 2.0-litre diesel engines under consideration will need a different fix. According to him, the technicians at VW are tirelessly working in order to create a pair for the defeat models. Some of the vehicles will require a full outfit with a Urea injection set-up. Meanwhile others will need just software updates.
