BMW might be developing the M3 Plug-In Hybrid

There is information that BMW is going to add a plug-in hybrid powerplant to one of its most classic sports sedans.

According to The Detroit Bureau, a BMW 3 plug-in hybrid is being developed now. New strict fuel economy regulations must be met by the car. The powertrain will be based on the used today 3.0-litre inline V6 engine. It will be joined to an electric powertrain.

They say that torque will be boosted by almost 73 lb-ft. Therefore, its number will stand at 480 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the producer has not announced the horsepower number. It is known that the model will be able to ride 20 miles on its electrical power only.

Despite flexibility of the platform, which is capable of supporting electric motors that provide front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive will stay as the regular layout of the M3. Torque vectoring will be offered too. The plug-in offering will boast a regenerative braking system.

It is a well-known fact that hybrid systems add weight. Weight always prevents a car from better performance. The automaker wants to fight this problem by developing the M3 with more carbon fibber along with things the producer has learnt from the i3 and i8, its latest range of lightweight hybrid vehicles.

The next-generation BMW M3 is scheduled to arrive in five years. There is plenty of time to wait until the official information appears.
