Nissan Xterra's Future will be Decided During the Next Year

The decision about the Nissan Xterra will be made during the next year as the Japanese company ponders upon the SUV’s future.

Having received insignificant upgrades since it went on sale in 2005, the Xterra has slowly disappeared in the marketplace and Nissan might allow it to just fade away. While a substitute is possible, the Xterra has had poor deliveries and the company is concerned about fuel efficiency and a possible lack of partners.

According to Pierre Loing, head of product planning for Nissan Americas, the Xterra does have plans for a substitute, but it’s not a definite if it will happen. And while the first-gen Xterra was extremely profitable, the whole rugged SUV market has begun to disappear, as evident with Toyota axing its FJ Cruiser.

In 2000, Nissan delivered 88,577 Xterra units but last year sold around 17,200. The 2013 Xterra is estimated at 16-mpg city, 22-mpg highway and is enhanced by a 4.0-liter V6 with 261 hp.

The final decision on the Nissan Xterra is going to be made in six months.
