Nissan Altima Coupe Publically Axed for 2014

The guillotine has publically fallen, axing the future of the Nissan Altima Coupe.

Deliveries chief Al Castignetti informed last March that the 2-door Altima wasn’t likely to live through another model year, and today the automaker publically confirmed that the vehicle will be killed after 2013. Choosing to axe the sporty-looking Altima shows the company’s focus on competing with main segment players featuring the Toyota Camry. Strong demand for the 4-cylinder current generation Altima sedan is an especially top priority for the brand right now.

“Manufacture of the Altima Coupe, which was released in the 2007 model year to compete in a niche market of mid-size coupes, has been axed to free up needed production resources at our 3 U.S. facilities,” informed Nissan spokesman Steve Yeager

When Castignetti gave the comments, the fresh Altima sedan had topped the Toyota Camry in deliveries. Those numbers didn’t stay the same in subsequent months as Toyota’s mid-size sedan delivered 207,626 models through June while Nissan only delivered 167,787 Altimas.

Initially launched in mid-2007 as a 2008 model year, the Altima coupe lasted just a generation. The company offered the 2-door version with both a 4- and 6-cylinder motor, although the 4 cylinder variant is the only one Nissan is still providing.
