Hyundai Gets $3M to Construct Hydrogen Fueling Point

Hyundai has gotten $3 mil. from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to construct a brand-new, 100-% renewable hydrogen fueling point for fuel-cell electric cars at the company’s hydrogen energy generation and fueling point in Chino, California.

At the fresh fueling point, 100 % of the energy used in generation and operation of the point along with all of the fuel dispensed will be received from a renewable source. The energy used to create hydrogen will be bought from a renewable energy provider and the station will provide at least 220 lbs of hydrogen per day.

The point, which is placed at a testing facility for Hyundai American Technical Center, Inc., will be placed where a current hydrogen point already is. That hydrogen point was originally constructed in 2005 to support the Korean company’s fuel-cell car fleet. Additionally to the $3 million provided, an additional $1.7 million has been given by partners Hydrogen Frontier, Inc., Powertech, and ITM Power, which will go towards upgrading the facility.

The fueling point will be publically open once it is completed, which is planned to be October 2014. Hyundai has been analyzing hydrogen-powered, fuel-cell cars in the U.S. since 2000.
