The first-generation Volvo S40 (factory code VS) was introduced in late 1995. Co-developed with Mitsubishi Motors and built at the NedCar facility in the Netherlands, it shared its platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma. Produced as a 4-door sedan, it made history in 2000 as the first car to earn a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Powertrains encompassed 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engines, along with 2.0T and high-performance T4 (200 hp) turbocharged variants. Diesels were 1.9-liter TD/dCi units from Renault. A major Phase II update in 2000 improved suspension architecture, exterior lighting, and cabin noise isolation.
