The Volvo Amazon family (factory code P120) debuted in 1956 featuring ponton styling designed by Jan Wilsgaard inspired by mid-century American aesthetics. Produced as a 4-door sedan (P120), 2-door sedan/coupe (P130), and 5-door wagon (P220), the Amazon made automotive history in 1959 by becoming the first production car fitted with three-point seat belts as standard equipment.

Powertrains included B16 (1.6L), B18 (1.8L), and B20 (2.0L) four-cylinder engines with 3- or 4-speed manual and BorgWarner automatic transmissions. The performance 123GT variant featured a 100 hp engine. Over 667,000 Amazons were produced across its 14-year lifespan.
