The Volkswagen Scirocco II (Typ 53B) launched at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show. Designed in-house under Herbert Schäfer, it refined aerodynamics with an integrated rear spoiler while offering increased rear headroom and boot capacity.

Engine choices ranged from 1.3 to 1.8-liter petrol engines, topped by the Scirocco GTX 16V producing 139 hp. Total production reached 291,000 units through 1992.
