Volkswagen Begins Production of 2027 Atlas at Chattanooga Plant
Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant in Tennessee has officially commenced production of the second-generation 2027 Atlas, marking the facility's most extensive tooling changeover since its opening. The redesigned three-row SUV features an updated exterior, a reworked interior, and an upgraded powertrain, with the first completed customer vehicles scheduled to arrive at dealership lots in October 2026.
The factory began retooling and building the 2027 model over the summer of 2026, retiring the production line that assembled the first-generation Atlas since 2016. Roughly 4,000 workers are employed at Chattanooga, with the majority directly supporting the Atlas program. Powering the new SUV is a 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 evo5 four-cylinder engine generating 282 horsepower, which Volkswagen identifies as the most powerful factory engine ever fitted to the nameplate.
While the three-row Atlas is already rolling off the assembly line, the closely related two-row Atlas Cross Sport is slated to join production later, with a rollout planned for the first quarter of 2027. Consequently, the Tennessee facility will focus exclusively on the three-row variant during the initial months of the manufacturing run.
Chattanooga has served as the sole production home for every Atlas sold in the United States since assembly initially began in December 2016, following an initial $900 million plant expansion. The strategic focus on large utility vehicles has yielded substantial volume, with more than 1 million combined Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models built to date. By its 15th anniversary in 2026, total vehicle output at the plant surpassed 1.85 million units. Prior to the latest generation Atlas, the site also manufactured the Passat sedan and the all-electric ID.4 crossover, the latter of which concluded its local production run in mid-April 2026.
