The Volkswagen Scirocco I (Typ 53) premiered in March 1974. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, the 2+2 sports coupe shared A1 platform componentry with the Golf I but launched six months earlier to evaluate market response to VW's front-wheel drive technology.

Engine offerings included 1.1 to 1.6-liter petrol engines delivering up to 110 hp in the Scirocco GTI. Weighing under 800 kg, its production crossed 504,000 units.
