The Volkswagen Multivan T4 introduced a front-engine layout from 1990 to 2003, setting a new benchmark for passenger vans.

The Volkswagen Multivan T4 marked a major engineering transition in 1990 by adopting a front-mounted engine and front-wheel-drive layout. Positioned as a premium multi-purpose passenger van, the Multivan featured a modular cabin with swiveling captain's chairs, a folding table, a convertible rear bed-bench, and sound insulation. A long-nose front fascia redesign was introduced in 1996 to accommodate larger engines.

Engine selections for the Multivan T4 included four- and five-cylinder gasoline engines, a top-spec 2.8-liter VR6 delivering up to 204 hp, alongside 2.4-liter naturally aspirated and 2.5-liter TDI turbodiesel units. Transmissions comprised five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics. All-wheel-drive Syncro variants utilized a viscous coupling system for enhanced traction.
