Debuting in Japan in January 1999 as the Toyota Vitz and launched in Europe as the Toyota Yaris, the XP10 generation transformed Toyota's supermini presence. Designed by Sotiris Kovos, the compact hatchback featured rounded tall-roof proportions maximizing interior head and legroom. A signature interior feature was the central digital instrument cluster with 3D display graphics and a sliding rear bench seat. Available body formats included three- and five-door hatchbacks, the Echo sedan, and the Yaris Verso MPV. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality.
Engine choices featured 1.0-liter 1SZ-FE (68 hp), 1.3-liter 2NZ-FE, and 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE (106 hp in the T Sport hot hatch) petrol units, along with a 1.4-liter 1ND-TV D-4D turbodiesel. Transmissions included 5-speed manuals, 4-speed automatics, and the Free-Tronic clutchless manual system. A mid-cycle update in 2003 brought revised front bumpers and lighting elements.
