The revival of the legendary Supra nameplate took place in 2019. The fifth generation (A90, marketed as GR Supra) was developed in partnership with BMW as part of a joint sports car project, meaning it shares its platform, engines, and transmissions with the BMW Z4 roadster. The exterior design was heavily inspired by the FT-1 concept, featuring a distinctive front fascia, a 'double-bubble' roof, and an integrated rear spoiler lip. The car achieved a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and structural rigidity surpassing even the carbon-fiber Lexus LFA supercar.

Power comes primarily from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine (BMW B58) producing 335 hp, which was upgraded to 382 hp for the 2021 model year. A lighter 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo (B48) producing 255 hp is also available in many markets. Initially, the GR Supra was offered exclusively with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, which sparked debate among purists. However, in 2022, Toyota responded to enthusiast demand by introducing a 6-speed manual transmission tailored specifically for the 3.0-liter engine models.
