Introduced in 1993, the fourth-generation Supra (A80) became an automotive cultural icon. The styling shifted to a smooth, aerodynamic design with an aggressive sports car stance and an optional, massive rear wing. Engineers focused heavily on weight reduction (making the car nearly 200 lbs lighter than its predecessor) and handling improvements. The A80 was powered by the famous 3.0-liter 2JZ series of inline-six engines. The naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE produced 220 hp, while the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE featuring sequential turbochargers delivered 280 hp in Japan and up to 320 hp for export markets.

The turbo version was paired with a robust 6-speed Getrag manual transmission, capable of handling immense torque. This matched the engine's legendary over-engineering, which allowed tuners to push power beyond 1000 hp without replacing internal components. The A80 also boasted world-class braking performance, holding a stopping distance record for several years. A minor facelift occurred in 1997. The model's popularity skyrocketed following its starring role in 'The Fast and the Furious', but tightening emissions regulations ended US imports in 1998, with Japanese production ceasing in 2002.
