Toyota Solara I (E110) photos

The first generation Toyota Camry Solara (E110 series) debuted in 1998 for the 1999 model year to replace the previous two-door Camry Coupe. Styled by Calty Design Research in California on the Camry XV20 platform, the Solara possessed unique exterior sheet metal, enhanced chassis bracing, and sport-tuned suspension valving to deliver a more engaging driving experience. In 2000, a two-door convertible model joined the lineup featuring a power-actuated retractable soft top with a heated glass rear window. The driver-focused cabin included a curved dashboard layout, optional leather seating, and a premium JBL sound system.

Engine offerings comprised a 2.2-liter 5S-FE four-cylinder (136 hp, replaced in 2002 by a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE producing 157 hp) and a smooth 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 generating 200 horsepower. Gearbox selections included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission. The SE-V6 trim catered to performance enthusiasts with manual shifter options and stiffer anti-roll bars. A mid-cycle refresh in late 2001 updated the front bumper air intake, clear-lens fog lamps, redesigned taillights, and interior accent trim.
