About this generation

The fifth generation Toyota RAV4 (XA50) introduced in 2018 is built on the TNGA-K platform, offering rugged styling and a 306-hp plug-in hybrid. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.

Debuting at the New York International Auto Show in March 2018, the XA50 generation is engineered on Toyota's TNGA-K modular platform. Its styling draws inspiration from the FT-AC concept, featuring angular body surfacing, a prominent hexagonal grille, and squared wheel arches. Chassis rigidity improved by 57%, while ground clearance increased. Advanced AWD options introduced Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with rear-driveline disconnect. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine options comprise 2.0-liter (171 hp) and 2.5-liter (203 hp) Dynamic Force gasoline engines, alongside self-charging hybrid (218–222 hp) and the high-performance RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (Prime) delivering 306 horsepower. Gearbox selections include 6-speed manuals, 8-speed Direct Shift automatics, and e-CVT units. A 2021 update brought revised LED headlamps and upgraded interior digital displays. The XA50 generation remains in active global production. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
