Launched in Japan in May 1994, the original RAV4 (XA10) revolutionized the automotive industry by establishing the compact crossover SUV segment. Built on a unique unibody platform leveraging Carina, Corolla, and Celica chassis components, it featured fully independent suspension and permanent all-wheel drive with a locking center differential. Body offerings included a sporty three-door, a longer five-door, and a three-door soft-top convertible model. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.
Power came from a robust 2.0-liter 3S-FE inline-four engine producing 120 to 135 horsepower (with high-output 165–180 hp 3S-GE engines in Japan). Gearboxes included a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive models were added to expand market accessibility. A 1997 facelift refreshed front grille designs, bumpers, and lighting, while Toyota also pioneered an all-electric RAV4 EV variant. Production ended in 2000.
