Debuting in May 2000, the second-generation RAV4 (XA20) expanded in size and introduced sophisticated exterior lines with improved cabin safety engineering. Offered in three-door and five-door crossover body styles, it featured modular interior seating that could be slid, folded, or completely removed to maximize cargo storage flexibility. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. European markets received a 2.0-liter 1CD-FTV D-4D turbodiesel. AWD models featured a center differential with a viscous coupling.
