Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in November 2005, the XA30 series transitioned exclusively to a five-door crossover body layout, dropping the three-door model. Built on an all-new platform, it was offered in two distinct body lengths: a short-wheelbase version for Europe and Japan, and an extended-wheelbase version with optional three-row seating for North America. Full-time AWD was replaced by an electronically controlled Active Torque Control 4WD system. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality.

Engine options included 2.0-liter Valvematic, 2.4-liter four-cylinders, 2.2-liter D-4D turbodiesels, and a range-topping 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 outputting 269 horsepower. Gearboxes ranged from 5- and 6-speed manuals to 4- and 5-speed automatics and Multidrive S CVTs. Facelifts in 2008 and 2010 introduced revised front styling and LED taillights. Production ran through 2016 in select manufacturing facilities. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies.
