The first generation Toyota Matrix (officially designated the Toyota Corolla Matrix) debuted in 2002 for the 2003 model year. Co-developed by Toyota and General Motors on the Corolla E120 platform, the vehicle was manufactured alongside its sister model, the Pontiac Vibe, at NUMMI in California and TMMC in Canada. Designed as a sporty crossover utility hatch, the Matrix featured a tall roofline, sweeping side body contours, and a distinctive rounded rear quarter window design. Inside, the functional cabin incorporated a driver-oriented dash with recessed instrument pods, a console-mounted shifter, and an all-plastic rear cargo floor equipped with integrated tie-down tracks.

Base and XR trims were powered by a 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE inline-four engine producing 130 horsepower paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants producing 123 horsepower. The performance-focused Matrix XRS featured a high-revving 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE engine tuned by Yamaha delivering 180 horsepower, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox. A subtle facelift for the 2005 model year revised the front grille, front bumper intake, clear-lens taillights, and interior dashboard trim options.
