Unveiled in May 1996, the J90 series Prado (J90 3-door, J95 5-door) established Prado as a standalone model line. Built on a revised chassis shared with the Hilux Surf, it adopted independent double-wishbone front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, significantly enhancing on-road handling and high-speed stability. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine configurations included a 2.7L 3RZ-FE four-cylinder, a 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 (185 hp), and 3.0L turbodiesels (1KZ-TE and later the common-rail 1KD-FTV D-4D with 163 hp). The vehicle was equipped with full-time 4WD featuring a lockable center differential. A 1999 update refreshed fog lamps, front grilles, and dashboard trim. J90 production ended in 2002. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies.
