Launched in April 1990, the original Land Cruiser Prado (J70 series / Land Cruiser II / Bundera) was engineered as a light-duty, passenger-oriented alternative to the heavy-duty J70 line. Featuring a redesigned front grille, square headlights, and full coil-spring suspension replacing leaf springs, it provided significantly smoother ride dynamics for urban and highway driving. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine offerings featured 2.4-liter 2L-T and EFI 2L-TE turbodiesels (97 hp), upgraded in 1993 to the celebrated 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE turbodiesel producing 130 horsepower. A 2.4-liter 22R-E petrol engine was also available. Transmissions were 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic paired with part-time 4WD. Production ran through 1996.
