The second generation Toyota Celsior luxury sedan (UCF20 series) launched in October 1994. Built on an extended 2,850 mm wheelbase (+35 mm), the cabin delivered significantly greater rear legroom while high-tensile steel construction trimmed overall curb weight by 95 kg. The exterior refined the executive profile of its predecessor with sharper character lines and restyled lighting assemblies. Interior highlights included a CD-ROM navigation interface, dual-zone climate control with smog sensors, and side airbags.
A major mid-cycle technical upgrade in late 1997 introduced Toyota's VVT-i variable valve timing to the 4.0-liter 1UZ-FE V8 engine, raising output to 280 horsepower and 402 Nm of torque, paired with a new five-speed automatic transmission. Mechanical additions debuted HID xenon headlamps, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and a laser-assisted adaptive cruise control system. Exported globally as the Lexus LS 400.
