Introduced in 1998, the second-generation Suzuki Vitara (FT/GT series, widely marketed internationally as the Grand Vitara) retained rugged body-on-frame construction while adopting smoother exterior lines and superior noise insulation. Available in 3-door hardtop, soft-top convertible, and 5-door wagon configurations, it retained a part-time Drive Select 4WD system with shift-on-the-fly capability at speeds up to 100 km/h and a low-range transfer case.

Engine configurations included a 1.6-liter inline-four (94 hp), a 2.0-liter inline-four (128 hp), and a smooth 2.5-liter DOHC V6 producing 144 to 158 hp. European markets also received Peugeot-sourced 2.0-liter HDi turbodiesel units delivering 109 hp. A 2003 interior and exterior update updated the center console, dashboard materials, air conditioning controls, and front fascia styling.
