Introduced in 2000, the first-generation Suzuki Ignis (chassis codes FH for 3-door and MH/HT51S for 5-door variants) combined high-roof hatchback packaging with crossover ground clearance. Co-developed with General Motors, the vehicle was rebadged in select international markets as the Chevrolet Cruze in Japan and Australia, and as the Subaru G3X Justy in Europe. Drivetrain options included standard front-wheel drive and optional viscous-coupling four-wheel drive.

Engine choices comprised 1.3-liter (83 to 94 hp) and 1.5-liter (99 to 109 hp) DOHC four-cylinder gasoline engines. In 2003, Suzuki introduced the performance-oriented Ignis Sport (HT81S), featuring a high-compression 1.5-liter VVT engine delivering 109 hp, a close-ratio manual gearbox, Recaro sports seats, stiffer dampers, and white multi-spoke alloy wheels.
