Suzuki SX4 I (EY/GY) photos

The first-generation Suzuki SX4, bearing factory code EY/GY, debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006. Jointly developed with Italian automaker Fiat, which rebadged its variant as the Fiat Sedici, the hatchback version featured exterior styling penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio. Available in five-door hatchback and four-door sedan body styles, the SX4 was built on a modified Swift platform engineered for higher rigidity and optional all-wheel drive. The i-AWD system featured three selectable modes via an electromagnetic coupling, providing front-wheel drive, automatic 4WD, or a locked 50:50 torque split for slippery surfaces.

Engine choices comprised naturally aspirated gasoline engines including a 1.5-liter, 1.6-liter, and a 2.0-liter unit for North American markets, alongside Fiat-sourced MultiJet turbodiesel engines ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. A mid-lifecycle update in 2009 introduced refreshed front styling, an updated instrument cluster, rear disc brakes as standard equipment, and revised engines with VVT variable valve timing. Assembly took place primarily at Suzuki's Esztergom plant in Hungary, alongside facilities in Japan, India, and China.
