Subaru Rex I (K21/K22/K24) gallery (1972–1981)

Introduced in July 1972, the first-generation Subaru Rex (K21/K22 sedan, K24 van) succeeded the Subaru R-2, retaining a rear-engine rear-wheel-drive architecture. Propulsion initially came from a 356 cc liquid-cooled two-stroke EK34 two-cylinder engine (32–36 hp), updated post-1976 regulations to four-stroke EK22 (490 cc) and EK23 (544 cc) units producing 31 hp. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

Major facelifts in 1976 and 1979 extended body bumpers to create the Rex 5 and Rex 550 series. Drivetrain options included 4-speed and 5-speed manual gearboxes before production ended in 1981. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
