Produced from November 1986 to 1992, the third-generation Subaru Rex (KG/KH/KP code) featured a streamlined aerodynamic 3/5-door hatchback body. Engine options initially centered on the 544 cc EK23 (including a 55 hp supercharged variant), upgrading in 1990 to the 4-cylinder 658 cc EN07 engine (42–64 hp). The MacPherson strut front suspension setup paired with the refined rear suspension layout struck an optimal balance between highway composure and smooth absorption of road surface imperfections. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. In 1987, it debuted Subaru's electronically controlled ECVT transmission.
