The second generation Crosstrek adopted the SGP platform, adding a 2.5-liter engine option and a Plug-in Hybrid powertrain.
Introduced in 2017, the second-generation Crosstrek (GT platform) adopted the Subaru Global Platform (SGP), delivering lower vibration levels and enhanced body rigidity. Core power came from a direct-injected 2.0-liter FB20D flat-four (152 hp) paired with Lineartronic CVT and X-Mode AWD. A Plug-in Hybrid variant (Crosstrek Hybrid PHEV) utilizing Toyota hybrid technology joined the lineup in 2018. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A 2020 mid-cycle update expanded the powertrain menu by introducing a 2.5-liter FB25D flat-four producing 182 hp for Sport and Limited trims. Exterior styling updates refreshed the front grille, bumper fascia, and wheel designs before second-generation production ended in 2022. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
