The first generation Crosstrek was launched in North America as the XV Crosstrek, offering rugged cladding and standard Symmetrical AWD.
Debuting at the 2012 New York International Auto Show as the XV Crosstrek (GP code), this generation served as the North American designation for the XV crossover line. Built on the Impreza chassis with a 220 mm ground clearance, integrated black body protective cladding, and roof rails, it was powered by a 2.0-liter FB20 flat-four engine producing 148 hp, mated to a 5-speed manual or Lineartronic CVT. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
The XV Crosstrek Hybrid variant premiered in 2013 incorporating an electric motor into the CVT housing. In 2015, the 'XV' prefix was officially dropped in North America alongside a facelift introducing refreshed front lighting, cabin trim revisions, and EyeSight safety technology. Production concluded in 2017. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
