Introduced in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow represented a revolutionary technological transition for the marque, leaving separate chassis behind in favor of a modern unitary monocoque construction. Designed by John Blatchley, the design prioritized interior spaciousness, visibility, and contemporary styling within more compact exterior dimensions. The chassis featured fully independent rear suspension and a Citroen-licensed high-pressure hydraulic system operating dual-circuit disc brakes and automatic self-leveling suspension. Initially powered by the 6.2-liter V8, the powertrain was upgraded in 1970 to a 6.75-liter V8 unit paired with a standard General Motors TH400 three-speed automatic gearbox. A long-wheelbase variant arrived in 1969, while two-door coachbuilt saloon and convertible versions were manufactured before evolving into the separate Corniche line in 1971. The Silver Shadow became the most commercially successful vehicle in Rolls-Royce history, distributed broadly across the UK, United States, Japan, and mainland Europe.
